Champagne
is trying to change its image. The new thing in Paris clubs is to drink Champagne
with a straw. Pop, a Champagne launched by Pommery, is sold in a 20 centiliter
blue bottle, a break from tradition. The bubbly has also a new formula: very
dry and with less bubbles so that it is easy to drink it with a straw. "We
want to be in complete break with the tradition, and also non conformists,""says
Frédéric Mercier, head of marketing for Pommery, which is trying
to appeal to the 25-35 set. Pop is meant to be drunk anytime one would drink
a cocktail. It is no longer reserved for special occasions. In just one year
since its launch, 1 million little blue and silver bottles have been sold while
Champagne consumption has decreased by 30% last year. |
