PARIS HOTLIST

William Eggleston

The artist, born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1939, changed photography with his 1976 show at the MOMA. Color photography gained recognition with Eggleston's mundane subject matter - a yellow phone on a counter top, a tricycle in a driveway, etc. The Cartier Foundation is presenting 200 recent prints from this iconoclastic artist.

Until Feb. 24, 2002. 261, Blvd Raspail. 75014. 01 42 18 56 50. www.fondation.cartier.fr

Over the past couple of years, the Muslim month long feast of Ramadan (a time of fasting) has become the hip event in the city. Everyone, including non muslims, take the ramadan as an excuse for evenings of dancing and partying, after one is allowed to break the fast, at sun down. Some of the best events this year:

Les Belles Nuits du ramadan: The Café de la Danse presents a series of wonderful concerts: the Kabyle artist Idir and her ballads, the arabo-jazz music of Anouar Brahem, Monajat Yultchieva, who comes from Uzbekistan. These are just a few from an amazing group of artists. Nov. 29-Dec. 8.
Café de la Danse. 5, passage Louis Philippe. 75011. 01 47 00 57 59.

Le Ramadan du Divan du Monde: Paris' most multicultural and most innovative nightclub has a series of great evenings during the fast. 75, rue des Martyrs. 75009. 01 44 92 77 66.

Carmen

One of the best productions in a long time of Bizet's opera. This time, Carmen is an Arabo-Andalusian lady. The opera is completely revisited by the director who even has a storyteller who sings in Arab.
