NEIGHBORHOOD SURVIVAL KIT (What you need to know):

Musée Bourdelle
One of Paris's small treasures, you will most likely have the museum to yourself. You will be in the workshop and house of the sculptor and have a feel for what the neighborhood must have been at the turn of the century before the area was damaged by urban developement of the worst kind.
18, rue Antoine Bourdelle. 15th. Metro: Falguière.
Tel: 01 49 54 73 73. Tues-Sat 10-5:40

Jardin Atlantique.
This wonderful garden is also the most invisible.
It is hard to find the entry or an elevator that works but if you find the staircase inside the gare Montparnasse, you will find yourself, two short flights of steps up, in heaven. The garden was built on top of the train station, amidst ugly buildings. Yet, it is one of Paris' most magical spaces with water fountains, lush vegetation, lawns on which you can picnic or simply daydream.
Gare Montparnasse or Rue du Cdt Mouchotte. Metro: Montparnasse

Wadja. This small and charming restaurant is the descendant of the original Wadja, opened just after the war by a Polish woman. Because it is next to the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where many famous artists work, Wadja new all the stars of Montparnasse. Excellent plats du jour. About 150F with an appetizer. In the evening, it is wise to reserve.
10, rue de la Grande Chaumière. 6th. Tel: 01 46 33 02 02.
Closed Sun. and Monday for lunch.
Metro: Vavin

Dietetic Shop. Right next door to the Lenox, one of the classic veggie restaurants in the city. The three women who cook delicious soups, salads, rice and vegetable, do so in the restaurant. You can talk with them as they prepare your food. Friendly and inexpensive. Try the "hard cocktail": fresh ginger, apples, oranges, bluberries, and muscat nut.
11, rue Delambre. 14th. Tel: 01 43 35 39 75. Mon.-Sat. 12-3 and 7-10:30. Metro: Vavin

Bistrot du Dôme. One of the best fish restaurants in the capital. Nice service and decor, a good wine selection. On the expensive side but well worth it (about 38 EUROS ).
1, rue Delambre. 14th. Tel: 01 43 35 32 00.

Fondation Cartier. The art collection of the famous jeweler has found its very special place on the Paris art scene. Built over the site of the old American Center, the foundation's spectacular building was designed by Jean Nouvel, and its garden by Lothar Baumgarten, the German conceptual artist. Its exhibitions are always original and inspiring, like "Désert", this fall's show.
