The neighborhood is soon going to be the very hot Paris neighborhood. It is still a working class "quartier" but young artists, writers, all the trendies are moving in.The Eldorado has become the new center of gravity of the area.
Still a bargain: rooms with a bathroom start at 23
EUROS for one person. The Eldorado is a former "maison de rendez-vous" where the 19th century bourgeois would keep their mistresses. The inner courtyard is wonderful. When it is warm, it attracts all the new residents of the arrondissement.

SURVIVAL KIT (what you need to know)

  • Le Cyrano. A great and weird place, next to L'Européen, a theater which is the temple for World music and "world artists". Le Cyrano is the meeting place for local people and the new imports.
    Address: 3, rue Biot.Tel: 01 45 22 53 34.

  • "24". You'd think you have made a mistake and entered Michele's dining room. This tiny restaurant (12 people max) is already famous for its home made vegetable soup (3 EUROS). Very authentic and friendly.
    Address: 24, rue Biot. Tel: 01 42 94 29 65.

  • Galerie Baïfall-Dream. Mike, who came from Senegal in the early 80's is the King of the neighborhood. He oversees a gallery of African art and his own store where he paints clothes. Some of Africa's most famous musicians, like Touré Kunda, are his clients.
    Address: 3, rue Lemercier. Tel: 01 42 94 26 07. baifall@ifrance.com.

  • Traiteur Deli. A nice little take out where you can find Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai food (without MSG).
You can have a lunch for 5
    EUROS . Can't beat that.
    Address: 9, rue des Dames. 17th. Tel: 01 45 22 84 55.

  • L'Endroit. This bar got its inspiration from the super cool bars of Barcelona. It has open on the lovely place which could be straight out of a 1950's American movie with Gene Kelly. Great drinks, cocktails and some simple but good dishes.
    Address: 67, place du Docteur Felix Lobligeois. 17th. Tel: 01 42 29 50 00. Metro: Rome.

  • Le Bistrot des Dames. It has just opened six months ago, but this is going to be the hit in Paris thanks to its very inventive regional cuisine. Its owner, Pascal Chardin, has left the Bastille area for this quiet rue des Dames. A sign that things are going to change.
    Address: 18, rue des Dames. 17th . Tel: 01 45 22 13 42.
