What you should know about the Euro |

| 1. December 14, 2001 You can start buying euros - but only coins - in banks and post offices, sold in bags of 40 for 15.24 euros (100 francs) |
| 2. December 31, 2001 At midnight, official beginning of the new European currency. Francs remain valid if you pay in cash but not if you pay with your credit card or a check. If you go to ATMs, you'll only get euros in 10 and 20 euro bills. |
| 3. February 17, 2002 At midnight, the francs will no longer be a valid currency. Other European countries will switch to euros on February 28. |
| 4. June 30, 2002 Final deadline to change your francs in banks or post offices. This is free if you have an account with that bank. If you don't, you'll have to pay a fee when changing more than 2,000 francs. |
| 5. February 17, 2005 Deadline to change your coins with the Bank de France (equivalent to the Treasury Department). You will be able to change your franc banknotes until February 17, 2012. 1 euro = 6,55 francs There are 8 euro coins: 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 euro, 2 euros. There are 7 euro banknotes: 5 euros, 10 euros, 20 euros, 50 euros, 100 euros, 200 euros and 500 euros (about $500). |
